Vrouw Maria was carrying some of the world's most precious art treasures. In addition to paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Dou Vrouw Maria also carried exclusive materials such as sugar, spices and coffee.
The coffee was unfortunately a part of this fateful voyage fatal blow. After Captain Reinhold Lorenz' navigation mistake in the dark autumn night in 1771, Vrouw Maria hit on a cliff, damaged the rudder and began taking in water.
The crew pumped and held her until afloat until coffee-beans paved their way from bags to the bilge pumps.
The Vrouw Maria Coffee is now availible in our Museum Shop.
